Artist-First art prize offers more support and fewer restrictions
Empowering Artists: The Basil Sellers Art Prize's Innovative ApproachIn recent decades, the proliferation of art prizes has led to artists investing substantial time and money, yet with no guarantee that their work will be selected. Many are questioning whether these prizes truly reflect their values and artistic principles. The Basil Sellers Art Prize (BSAP) aims to address this concern by adopting an "Artist-First" approach, prioritizing the needs and experiences of participating artists.

Putting Artists at the Forefront

The BSAP's commitment to an "Artist-First" approach is rooted in its recognition of the significant investment artists make in entering art prizes. Indira Carmichael, the Coordinator of Creative Arts Development for Eurobodalla Shire Council, explains that the surge in art prizes in recent years has led to a potential loss of focus on the artists themselves.

Streamlining the Entry Process

To address this, the BSAP has implemented several innovations in its entry process. The team has simplified the entry form and eliminated any requirements that are only necessary for finalists, such as researching couriers and committing to delivery methods before being selected. Additionally, the artist/artwork statement has been made optional, potentially saving thousands of artist hours.

Fostering Connections and Opportunities

The BSAP's "Artist-First" approach extends beyond the entry process. Unlike many art prizes where artists whose works have been rejected never hear from the organization again, the BSAP actively seeks to connect with artists around the country. Carmichael explains that the team is always on the lookout for interesting shows, potential collaborations, and innovative ideas, and they view the prize as a way to engage with creative practitioners who may be earmarked for future opportunities.

Prioritizing Kindness and Sensitivity

The BSAP's commitment to its "Artist-First" approach is evident throughout the entire process, from the initial call for entries to the deinstallation of the exhibition and the return of the artworks. Carmichael emphasizes the importance of greater kindness and sensitivity to the realities of contemporary art practice in Australia, ensuring that artists' needs are at the heart of the prize.

A Positive Experience for All Participants

By prioritizing the needs and experiences of participating artists, the BSAP aims to create a positive experience for all who engage with the prize. Carmichael believes that this approach moves the organization towards accomplishing its goal of ensuring that artists feel valued and supported, regardless of whether their work is selected for the final exhibition. The Basil Sellers Art Prize, now in its 20th year, has evolved from a small regional prize to a nationally recognized competition. With its "Artist-First" approach, the BSAP is setting a new standard for art prizes, demonstrating a genuine commitment to the well-being and success of the artists it serves.
