"We didn't have any references from the beauty industry when it came to creating something natural that actually works," Val recalls. Their solution? To harness the power of seasonal plants and use them to address various skincare concerns, much like the approach taken in the food industry.

Rowse's founders were adamant that their brand would offer something different from the mainstream clean beauty options. "We could have had cheaper formulas and an easier image for mainstream shoppers to buy [into], but we wanted something different," says Val. This commitment to differentiation led them to a more luxurious and elevated approach, crafting products like their signature tangerine cleansing balm and an olive oil-based soap line. By prioritizing quality, efficacy, and a distinctive aesthetic, Rowse has cultivated a loyal following among consumers seeking a premium, natural alternative to traditional beauty brands.

Navigating the Challenges of Sustainable Entrepreneurship

Starting a sustainable business in the beauty industry has been no easy feat. Val acknowledges that the path to building Rowse has been filled with obstacles, from developing effective formulas to navigating the high costs associated with ethical sourcing and production. "Sustainability is a long path – if you want to build things right, it's expensive and it's difficult," she admits. However, the co-founders remained steadfast in their commitment to their values, even when it meant forgoing easier, more conventional routes.

The partnership between Val and Salord has been instrumental in Rowse's success. Despite the physical distance between them during the brand's formative years, the two founders maintained an unwavering trust and shared vision. "The trust was difficult to explain," says Val. "Rowse is so strong in its image and values because she trusted me to develop it." This collaborative dynamic allowed them to refine the brand's creative direction and product development in a way that remained true to their principles.

Expanding Beyond Skincare: Rowse's Holistic Approach

As Rowse continues to grow, the co-founders have their sights set on expanding beyond their core skincare offerings. In the coming years, they plan to introduce a toxin-free makeup line, including a BB cream. However, their ultimate goal is to create a comprehensive lifestyle brand that encompasses not just beauty, but also wellness and hospitality. "In 10 years, I'd love to put all this lifestyle and beauty and wellness together and have our own hotel and spa, to have people go there and enjoy the whole experience of what Rowse means to us," Val reveals.

Drawing from her own experiences, Val offers valuable advice for those interested in entering the beauty industry. She emphasizes the importance of authentic passion, cautioning against opportunistic ventures that aim to capitalize on trends. "To start something, you have to really trust in it," she says. Additionally, Val stresses the significance of maintaining a work-life balance, as the demands of entrepreneurship can easily consume one's personal life. "Having a company can be so consuming and it can affect your family and friendships; separating business from the rest of your life is important," she advises.As Rowse continues to evolve and expand its reach, the brand's unwavering commitment to sustainability, creativity, and a holistic approach to self-care serves as a shining example of what can be achieved when passion, vision, and perseverance converge.
