Unleashing the Theatrical Magic: Gateway's Summer Theater Camp Captivates Audiences

Gateway Musical and Monroeville Recreation Parks have once again joined forces to host the second edition of Gateway's Summer Theater Camp. This year's production, a shorter version of the beloved Disney classic "Frozen," showcased the exceptional talents of young performers from the local community.

Empowering Young Thespians to Shine on Stage

Auditions and Workshops: Cultivating Theatrical Excellence

The Summer Theater Camp welcomed students from third to eighth grades across Gateway and surrounding districts to participate in the program. Approximately 25 aspiring actors and actresses auditioned on June 22, showcasing their skills and passion for the performing arts. Over the following week, from June 24 to 28, the campers engaged in a series of workshops focused on various aspects of theater, including acting, vocal training, choreography, and stage management.

Bringing "Frozen Kids" to Life: A Remarkable Feat

After just one week of intensive rehearsals, the Summer Theater Camp participants took the stage on June 29, presenting two captivating performances of "Frozen Kids" at the high school's Robert A. Read Performing Arts Center. The production, a condensed version of the Disney classic, was a testament to the dedication and hard work of the young performers.

Experienced Guidance and Unwavering Support

The Summer Theater Camp was led by a talented team of directors and staff members. Director Eric Phelps, a Penn Trafford alum and a graduate of New York University's Tisch School, guided the young thespians through the creative process. Associate Director Janine Kucinski and Producer Mary Chase, along with a team of 19 volunteers and more than a dozen staff members, provided invaluable support and mentorship to the campers.

A Transformative Experience for Aspiring Actors

The Summer Theater Camp offered a unique and rewarding experience for the participants. Richard Lehman, a 2024 Penn Trafford graduate and sophomore at Pace University, served as the Assistant Stage Manager, describing the opportunity as a "different experience" that was "very rewarding."

Inclusive and Accessible Opportunities

The Summer Theater Camp is sponsored by Gateway Musical and Monroeville Recreation Parks, as well as local businesses, ensuring that the program is accessible to children from all backgrounds. Financial assistance is available for those in need, allowing more young performers to participate and showcase their talents on the stage. The success of the Summer Theater Camp is a testament to the power of community collaboration and the transformative impact of the performing arts on young lives. As the curtain falls on another year of theatrical magic, the organizers and participants alike eagerly anticipate the next chapter of this inspiring journey.
