In Colombia, rural populations are earning sustainable livelihoods through frass-fed insects used as fish feed, while a company in Finland has hailed the production of fish feed from black soldier fly larvae as the "perfect solution" for the future of aquaculture. Researchers in the United States have even calculated that if soldier fly protein was fed to salmon, trout, and shrimp, it could spare 40,843 tonnes of wild fish every year.

Navigating the Challenges of Regulation and Quality Control

As the use of black soldier fly larvae in aquaculture gains momentum, some experts have raised concerns about the need for a clear regulatory framework and quality control measures. David Mirera, a senior research scientist at KMFRI, warns that without proper hygiene guidelines and controls, there is a risk of disease in the fish feed produced from the larvae.However, many Kenyan fish farmers have already embraced the convenience and reliability of the black soldier fly-based feeds. Juma Mashanga, who helps lead a group of community fishers farming fish in cages in the Indian Ocean, attests to the benefits of this approach. "With cages, there is a guarantee of harvesting at maturity, and the returns are good," he says. "Sustaining the cages and feeding the fingerlings is manageable because we can process our [black soldier fly] protein feeds at home."As the use of black soldier fly larvae continues to expand, it will be crucial for policymakers and industry stakeholders to work together to establish robust regulatory frameworks and quality control measures.
