Greenport's Summer of Fun: Rediscovering Childhood Delights and Community Spirit

Greenport, a charming coastal town on Long Island's North Fork, has long been a beloved destination for families seeking to create unforgettable summer memories. This year, the town is upping the ante, offering a host of new attractions and events that cater to both young and old, ensuring that everyone can embrace their inner child and bask in the community's vibrant spirit.

Reviving Nostalgic Traditions and Fostering Community Connections

The Greenport Express Chugs Back Into Town

For decades, the Greenport community has cherished the memory of a beloved mini-railroad that once delighted children and families alike. After a decade-long hiatus, the Greenport Rotary has breathed new life into this cherished tradition, unveiling the "Joe Cherry Choo-Choo" – a lovingly restored train that now winds its way through the picturesque Moores Lane Polo Grounds. This labor of love, spearheaded by Rotary members and community volunteers, has not only rekindled a beloved pastime but also serves as a testament to the town's unwavering spirit of collaboration and preservation. The Greenport Express, as it's affectionately known, will be open to the public on weekends from June through mid-October, offering families the chance to embark on a nostalgic journey through the lush greenery of the Polo Grounds. With former Greenport Mayor George Hubbard and current Mayor Kevin Stuessi among the first to experience the revived train ride, this attraction promises to become a cherished summer tradition for generations to come.

Sky Piano Comes to the Boardwalk

Strolling through the picturesque Mitchell Park in Greenport, visitors may be surprised to hear the sweet sounds of an acoustic piano echoing through the air. This unexpected musical addition is the result of a collaborative effort by the Friends of Mitchell Park, who have installed a vibrant, sky-blue piano for the public to enjoy.Donated by local resident Poppy Johnson and meticulously maintained by the "Classic Piano Doc," Doug Gregg, the "Sky Piano" has become a magnet for budding and seasoned musicians alike. Inspired by the whimsical artwork of Fluxus artist Geoff Hendricks, the piano's striking appearance invites passersby to sit down and unleash their musical talents, creating a lively and engaging atmosphere in the heart of the village.Mayor Kevin Stuessi has enthusiastically embraced this new addition, recognizing it as a natural fit with the village's ongoing efforts to encourage active engagement with Mitchell Park. The piano's presence, coupled with the recently launched Friday farmers market, promises to transform the park into a bustling hub of community activity and artistic expression.

Sound & Skate Festival Returns

Greenport's vibrant skate culture is set to take center stage once again with the return of the annual Sound & Skate Festival. Organized by the Greenport Skate Park Inc., this event celebrates the community's passion for skateboarding, music, and the arts, all while raising funds for the much-needed renovation of the nearly 30-year-old Greenport Skate Park. The festival, scheduled for July 13th, promises a day filled with excitement and entertainment. Visitors can expect to witness thrilling skateboarding demonstrations, enjoy a diverse lineup of live music, and immerse themselves in a vibrant showcase of local art and artisanal vendors. The event also features a skate contest, providing a platform for both local and visiting skaters to showcase their skills and compete for prizes.Beyond the entertainment, the Sound & Skate Festival serves as a crucial fundraising initiative to support the revitalization of the Greenport Skate Park. The organizers have already reached a significant milestone, raising 0,000 towards the project, and this year's event aims to build on that momentum, further engaging the community and securing the resources needed to create a safe, modern space for the town's youth to thrive. As Rena Wilhelm, the President of Greenport Skate Park Inc., eloquently states, "It's a wonderful opportunity to bring our community together, celebrate local talent, and support the revitalization of our beloved skate park. We encourage everyone to come out, have fun, and be a part of this fantastic event."
